Micro-blogging with sites like Twitter is so 2008. The latest trend for the 2009 social media rockstar is to show the world where you are and where you’ve been. It’s now possible to capture not just the time, but your precise location from all manner of different devices, and publish any content you take on dozens of different sites that display your location on interactive maps.

Gadgets that capture your location

Just some of the gadgets available to you for capturing your location include:

Stand alone GPS devices – the latest Sat-Navs from the likes of Tom Tom and Garmin don’t just tell you where you are, they let you take Geocoded pics and videos and even

Cameras with built-in GPS . Try the Nikon P6000, or read about the dozens of different GPS camera options available to you.

Camcorders with GPS – the first consumer models will be the Sony Handycam HDR-XR500 and XR520, both of which will feature built-in GPS and geotagging of your videos when they’re released, later in 2009.

Cameraphones with GPS, including the Nokia N95, N82, N96 and E90, the LG Renoir II KC910, and the Samsung Omnia i900, or the superb 8 megapixel Sony Ericsson C905.

Location-aware Browsers – Mozilla’s Geode extension for Firefox works out where your laptop is from the proximity of nearby networks

USB or Bluetooth GPS devices – useful if you want more accurate results than network triangulation. Try the Garmin Mobile PC, for example, available in both USB and Bluetooth versions.

Add on gadgets – if you can’t afford a gadget with built-in GPS, try the tiny Sony GPS-CS1, which adds geocoded data onto your pictures and videos after you’ve taken them – even if you’re nowhere near the location where they were taken from!

Geotagging sites for showing off your location

Capturing your location is one thing – what do you do with it once you’ve got it?

Simple – you upload your pictures, videos or text to the site of your choice and let it display your travels on a fully interactive map, so your fans can follow you wherever you go. Just some of the sites you could use include:

Flickr, Picasa, Panoramio, SmugMug, Locr, Fotonauts and dozens of other image sites, which can all display geotagged images on an interactive map

Feedburner – lets you stamp your co-ordinates on your blog’s RSS feed. Try mixing Geode with Feedburner for automatic geo-blogging.

Plazes and Brightkite – social networks that focus on telling the world and your fans where you are.

Geotagging is still in its infancy, and although there are several handy guides on what you’ll need to do it, it can be difficult to setup, particularly if your device isn’t designed to support it. Some phones, for example, despite coming with GPS built-in, won’t automatically geotag your photos.

Fortunately, you can install software such as ShoZu, which will not only automatically geotag your images and pics for you, it’ll also upload the content to Flickr, YouTube, or many other sites, with the geotag info all ready to use by the site of your choice.

If you’re tech-savvy, you might like to try out Yahoo!s FireEagle, which takes your location from many different devices and lets you export it to dozens of different sites in all manner of different ways. With FireEagle, for example, you could create a widget that puts your current location on a blog, or which updates your Facebook status or loyal Twitter followers with your location. You’re a social media rockstar, remember, with profiles and accounts in tonnes of different social networks. Update them all with your location with FireEagle, and literally let your followers follow you!

FireEagle’s not for the faint-hearted, though, but again there are some useful FireEagle tutorials out there to help you get the most from it.

If you want a simpler way of using FireEagle to update your location to the hundreds of social networks you belong to, let Plazes do it for you.

Summary

If this has whetted your appetite for Geoblogging, have a look at the many Geotagging sites that make innovative use of the geotagged info you provide.

What are you waiting for? You want to be a social media rockstar – get out there and show the world where you are!

If you love making videos, want to make money from them and become the next YouTube superstar, then success and riches are just an upload away.

If only it were that easy! Fortunately, I’ve created a guide on how to succeed with online video, which shows you how to use your video camera, the dozens of video upload sites and your own imagination to make real money with online video.

How to succeed as a Video blogger

There are two ways of making money from a video blog: either make yourself the focus of your videos, or create a blog that includes your own videos and those from other people.

Video blogging using your own and other people’s videos

If it’s Internet celebrity status you’re after, such as Robert Scoble, then you’ll need to include yourself in the videos you shoot, even if it’s only behind the camera. A much easier, way, though, is to mix video that you shoot yourself with videos from other producers.

The guys at YouGottaSeeThisVideo.com (left) did this to perfection, and were nominated for best video blog 2007 at the prestigious Weblog awards.

This is an easier way to have success with a video blog, as creating video can be quite time consuming, so combining your own video with videos that other people have created ensures you get more high quality content than you would if you were shooting all the vids yourself. Just make sure the other videos are related to the topic you focus on, and ensure that your video blog has a consistent theme throughout.

For tips on creating a video blog and monetizing it using your own videos and those from other people, check out the following:

Using YouTube to become a leader in your blog niche – blogging and social media genius Maki (one of Digg’s top superusers) shares his thoughts on becoming a successful blogger by using a successful Youtube user as a case study.

More top advice from Maki on making money for a video blog – does exactly what it says on the tin. Maki’s posts are so consistently good, you wonder how he has time to sleep!

Video blogging all by yourself

If you want to be YouTube famous, you’ll need to ensure you’re always in the video somewhere, even if it’s only as a voice over behind the camera. This will only work if you have a loud and engaging personality – no-one wants to see videos of dull people.

Look at Perez Hilton (left), for example. His whole site isn’t just about celebrity gossip, it’s about him and his personality.

If you want to be Internet famous, you need to be able to capture’ people’s attention in a similar way (well, maybe not in quite such a similar way! – there’s only room in this world for one Perez Hilton, surely!)

One way to test this out is to start live blogging yourself on Justin.tv. Here you can experiment with a small audience to begin with, and build it up over time, before branching out with your own video-based Web site around you.

If you don’t have a loud personality, or you don’t want to be Internet famous but like shooting video, then consider live blogging important people or events.

The best example of this type of video blogger is Robert Scoble, who scours the world to get the latest scoops on tech-related subjects, and interviews the people in the industry who matter.

You can live blog trade shows, conferences, launch parties – pretty much anything that people want to see. You can do it to generate traffic to your own blog, or to promote someone else’s for money. Effectively, you become a freelance blogger for someone who pays you to cover important events.

How to succeed with viral videos

If you’re the creative type and love creating your own videos, then you need to make your video go viral if you want success.

A viral video is one that people like so much, they share it with their friends, who in turn share it with their friends, and so on.

The video literally spreads like an epidemic, gaining you maximum exposure.

Be warned, this is not an easy process, but the rewards can be huge.

Finding the killer hook you need to get your video to go viral is the secret to viral success.

It’s a black art, though, and will require much trial and error, but here are some excellent articles with tips and advice that’ll give you a head start:

Viral marketing with Lisa Nova’s sexy videos – sex sells, and Lisa Nova (in the video, above) knows it, exploiting this age old marketing trick to perfection. She’s created a series of sexy characters that you can use in your own video clips completely free. Called Lisa Nova collab characters, they can help spice up your clips, while promoting Lisa herself – clever! Emulating Lisa’s strategy is one option, but using Lisa’s video clips yourself in your own clips may be a better option if you have the sex appeal of a moose’s arse.

If you’re still looking for inspiration, check out the deeply ironic vid below on how to make viral video clips!

Custom video creation

If you love creating video and want to be paid for your efforts, consider becoming a freelance video producer. Companies will pay you to create videos to advertise their products or services. You need to be skilled in creating videos to do this, but if you’ve got the talent, head to MediaMobz and sign up as a producer. In the first of our Social Media Mentalism series, I’ll show you the gadgets you need to become a YouTube superstar. Not just YouTube though – there are dozens of sites like you YouTube that let you upload your Web video and become Internet famous.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to make YouTube videos and rock the social video world. Together, we’ll look at what makes the best YouTube camera, where to publish your videos, and even a few tips on what to actually record to make you the next YouTube superstar!

Choosing the best YouTube camera

Obviously you’ll be needing a decent camcorder, but what makes for the best YouTube camera?

Well, depending on what you’ll be doing to gather the attention of thousands of loyal fans, you’ll generally need a lightweight camcorder that can take good quality video in different lighting conditions, and which preferably enables video editing and video uploads to your social video site of choice, all in one box.

Why do you need all this functionality? Because you never know when that scoop is going to happen. If you see something big that’s happening in front of your eyes, you not only need to record it, you need to upload it before anyone else in order to guarantee that you’re credited with the scoop.

Trade shows, events, citizen journalism – all these things rely on getting to the news first if you want to make a big impression (and a loyal following). How do you think Perez Hilton managed it? Capturing the video, editing it and uploading it from the same device cuts down the time needed to get it seen, and ensures you get the scoop before the competition.

Here’s a selection of YouTube camaras for you to consider.

Flip MinoHD

This super-small camcorder is about the size of a mobile phone. It was the first camcorder designed specifically for YouTube. As such, the quality isn’t perfect, as the resultant videos are designed to be seen on a Web page, not an HDTV!

However, I was skeptical about the original Flip Mino when I reviewed it, as its quality wasn’t that good at all, but as a concept, it was perfect.

Simply record your videos, plug the Flip Mino into your PC, and upload to YouTube with the press of a button.

Super simple, but that’s exactly what you need if you want to upload your videos as quickly as possible.

Since the success fo the original Flip Mino last year, Pure Digital (the makers of the Flip) have just released the Flip Mino HD, which adds much better quality (720p HD, no less!) in a range of lighting conditions, making this one actually usable.

There’s no on-board image editing software and no uploading to YouTube without first connecting to a PC (which you do via USB). However, once your Flip Mino is connected, uploading to YouTube is a doddle. For size and simplicity, the Flip MinoHD is hard to beat.

Kodak Zi6 Pocket Video Camera

The Kodak Zi6 High Definition Pocket Video Camera
is a direct competitor to the Flip Mino, doing everything the little Flip does, but with more storage space.

Whereas the Flip tops out at 4GB (max. 60 mins of recording time), the Kodak can record up to 32GB of video.

Unlike the Flip, the Kodak also comes with video editing software, which, although limited, at least gives you the option of trimming your video down in size if it’s too large for uploading onto YouTube (which has a1GB per video limit).

The Kodak is arguably the better YouTube camera, simply because it offers video editing features, but how useful they are on a small screen, you’ll have to judge for yourself.

Equally, the Kodak is more expensive – in fact, its price isn’t that far off a dedicated camcorder, like the JVC and Samsung models listed below, which surely defeats the point of such a device?

JVC Everio camcorders

If you’re after something a bit more professional than mini camcorders, you could do a lot worse than the JVC Everio GZ-MS100. I personally have a 2008 model JVC Everio camcorder, and I can’t fault it – supremely easy to use, great picture quality, and exceptional value for money.

The 2009 models go one better, though, with a One Touch Upload function that takes your video and automatically exports it to YouTube or iTunes via your PC, or lets you burn a DVD of the vid, all from one touch of the camcorder (well, more than one touch, but it’s still super-simple!). No wonder the MS100 has been called the JVC YouTube camcorder!

CrunchGear reviewed a 2008 model back in June last year, and concluded that:

“This camera would be great for…drumroll please…people who are somewhat technically inclined, don’t need to edit their videos, and want to get them uploaded as quickly as possible. My fellow technology bloggers come to mind. I can picture myself using this at an event to record a keynote address and then zipping it up to YouTube immediately so that I can get it up on CrunchGear as in short order.”

In other words, exactly the kind of camcorder you need to become a YouTube superstar!

Samsung MX20 YouTube camcorder

Perhaps the best camcorder of all for the budding YouTube superstar, though, is the Samsung VP-MX20/XEU YouTube Camcorder (also called the Samsung SC-MX20 in the US – no idea why!).

As it’s name suggests, this super-lightweight SD-based camcorder has been designed to record video directly in YouTube format. No need to worry about editing the video after you’ve taken it to fit YouTube’s requirements, as it automatically records in the native YouTube resolution (720×480) and frame rate, meaning what you see on the camcorder is exactly what your loyal fans will see on YouTube.

It’ll also record in other formats in case you want better quality than that designed for the Web, and with 32GB of on-board memory, you can store more video on the camcorder than YouTube will let you upload in one go.

There are some great deals on the SC-MX20 now, as it’ll soon be replaced by another Samsung YouTube camcorder, the Samsung SMX-F34, which was announced last week at CES 2009.

These are probably the best camcorders around at the moment for live blogging or other social media rockstar work – they even get the seal of approval from none other than the producer of social media legend Robert Scoble, and you can’t get a better recommendation than that!

You’ve got the gear – now what?

So now you know what YouTube camcorder to go for – but what exactly do you do with it? How do you use your shiny new gadget to become Internet famous and create that social media profile you always dreamed of (well, ok, maybe not always dreamed of, but we all need a bit of fame in our lives!)

In the next few days, I’ll show you where you can publish your videos, and also give you some ideas of what to start recording in order to become a legendary YouTube superstar!

That’s not all though – social media is about much more than just video. Over the coming weeks, I’ve got a bunch of posts to publish that show you how to use image sites, news sites, and even GPS devices to really rock the social media world.

These aren’t small posts, and they take some time to craft, so you might want to subscribe to MediaMentalism to ensure you don’t miss a thing!

A little while ago we wrote about the SpeakerBuddy which reminded us of a cowering child with a hoodie (not sure what that says about our state of mind) but kitting out your Hi-Fi with little people shaped speakers can be a bit on the pricy side. With the recession looming we all need to save the change where we can, so how about creating your own “SpeakerBuddy”?

To make your very own person shaped speaker you simply have to butcher a little toy called “Munny” which can be purchased at Kidrobot. There are a selection of colours and styles. If you find having little people with music blearing out of their faces is not creepy enough for you, you could have one of these speaker people hold an axe as pictured.

The general process for creating these speakers is extreamly easy and logical and involves cutting the face off the Munny and replacing it with a speaker. For the full step by step instructions with useful pictures check out Munny Speakers at Instructables.

So you want to watch something but you haven’t got the DVD and it is not on TV right now? Fancy watching what you want for free and right now? Thankfully the internet is a wondrous place and comes to your rescue.

There are a plethora of sites out there on the World Wide Web that enable you to watch just about any program or movie you can think of. I recently took a trip down memory lane and watch some of the kids programs I grew up with… did I mention the Internet is awesome? Anyway enough about me; as with “steaming web media with a Wii” this article is not aimed at telling you how to steam media but is intended to help you find the thing you want.

GENERAL TIPS

Before we get started there are a few things to keep in mind when finding your videos on the internet:

Several of the videos are of low quality but you can find some real treasures out there so don’t get disheartened just keep looking.

Depending on your bandwidth and internet provider, videos can take a little while to download so be patient, but remember you don’t have to wait for it to be fully downloaded when streaming before you can start watching.

The DivX player has a neat feature. When it streams it saves the video on your hard drive in the folder “DivX MoviesTemporary Downloaded Files”. The file will have an extension of .part, just rename the file extension to .avi and you can play the movie on your machine without accessing the internet. This is particularly useful if the video is in a foreign language because you can download the subtitles from sites like OpenSubtitles and SubScene. Once you have the video and subtitles downloaded just rename the subtitles to have the same name as the video and then play the video. As long as you have something like DirectVobSub installed you will see the subtitles.

If all else fails google is your friend. Try typing “watch [video] online” where you replace [video with the thing you want to watch. Or if you are feeling adventurous you can use a combination of advanced search operators that specify video files available in an Apache directory listing to find video files on servers. Try this search for videos related to James Bond: -inurl:(htm|html|php) intitle:”index of” +”last modified” +”parent directory” +description +size +(mpg|avi) “james bond”.

TV CHANNEL SITES

There are a growing number television channels which are making their TV programs available online. Can I hear a hurrah?

One problem with these official sites is that they often restrict usage to particular countries, such as Hulu below which requires you to be located in the US. There are ways around this so if you are an American visiting the UK never fear because you can us a proxy such as Hotspot Shield which will make it appear like you are accessing the internet from America.

For all those based in the United States (and those using a proxy), here is a treat for you. Hulu is an awesome site which brings together media from several different sites. With Hulu you have access to content from Fox, NBC, Warner Bros. TV, and over 15 cable networks (Bravo, E! Entertainment, USA, and more). The site has licensing deals with Fox, MGM, Sony, Universal, Lionsgate movie studios; as well as the NBA, and NHL.

Hulu brings you a wide variety of full-length episodes, popular video clips, and even a few full-length movies which are easy to search and play. One downside except for only being accessible to the US is that some of the content has adverts, but that is only a minor issue when you think of what you are getting in return.

Moving onto the awesomeness that is the BBC iPlayer. With this beauty you can watch BBC programs or listen to BBC radio online for free. In my opinion the iPlayer has gone from strength to strength and the video quality is superb. In the past the BBC iPlayer only kept programs on the site for 7 days but it seems that some programs are being kept online for longer now.

We could carry on listing all the television channels and their corresponding website but that would bore us and you, so if there is a program on a particular channel which you like just do quick search for the channel and chances are it will have a catch up section which will enable you to watch the desired program. If not then don’t worry, just keep on reading this article because there are plenty of ways to get around such problems.

LINK INDEX SITES

The websites that fit into this area do not host videos themselves but instead amass a huge resource of links to other sites which do host the videos. These sites are invaluable to the watcher of free media. Here are three of the best on the web.

General
Surf The Channel has a small ambition in life: “indexing “all videos, everywhere” and listing them in easy to navigate pages”. And I have to say they are doing a great job. Surf The Channel have got several categories to choose from and also have a leaderboard of video sites that makes it a doddle to find new video sources.

AllUC is similar to Surf The Channel, if you can’t find the video you want on one try the other. The videos are split into: cartoons, TV-shows, anime, movies, music videos, sports videos, and documentaries. The videos are rated so you can see which ones are good or not and the links are regularly checked to make sure they are still working.

Anime

Kumby is a specialised link site which focuses on links to anime series and anime movies. Personal favourite of mine, this site is great for all those who love anime and can’t wait to download them using torrents.

Movies

Online Theatre & Digital Jukebox is not nice to look at and is badly designed, but if you can get past that it has a whole load of movie links which will keep you entertained for days. A nice touch to the site is the descriptions of the movies as well as the links to actually view the movie.

VIDEO HOST SITES

Everyone is familiar with this type of video site; if you have not heard of YouTube by now then you are in for a real treat. I had to mention YouTube because it is so big and well know but there are others out there which rival this giant.

Guga for example has a huge selection of TV and movies, yet is virtually unheard of compared to YouTube. Guga has fast speeds and excellent quality (far better than the one I have already named three times).

Tudou is huge over in China, moving more than 1 Petabyte of video every day. This is a great site with fast download speeds and because it is in Chinese you will find videos which are deleted off other sites are not deleted off Tudou. The downside is it is in Chinese so use sites like Surf The Channel to find the videos.

Megavideo allows large video file size upload so movies and TV programs are generally in one piece rather than split into multiple bits. Megavideo is known for good quality and fast loading times. Like Tudou, videos tend to stay on the site because there is virtually no moderation done.

Whatever way you choose to watch your programs and movies I hope you enjoy the free resources of the Internet. If you have any other links please share them and post a comment below.

You are out and about with your laptop and want to access the internet, maybe to write a blog entry or you have some other work to do. Slight problem, there are no WiFi hotspots anywhere near you! You could do the stuff on your iPhone but it lacks a decent text editor and it is not the best solution for prolonged web surfing. So what can you do, is there a way to tether your iPhone? Tethering refers to a method that enables your laptop to use your mobile phone’s wireless data connection, i.e. your mobile phone becomes a wireless modem for your laptop.

The Apple iPhone doesn’t support tethering, it was deliberately left out and this is a big letdown for most. Luckily there are lots of clever people out there who were not happy with this situation so they did something about it. Carry on reading to find out how you can tether your iPhone…

Nullriver are some of the smart people who came up with NetShare app that is basically just a SOCKS proxy that will enable you to link an ad-hock WiFi network to the iPhone’s 3G so you can browse the Web on your laptop using your iPhone’s data connection. NetShare even made it onto Apple’s App Store before the censors realised what it did and yanked the software.

There are not many instructions on how to get it up and running but engadget has put together a video for you:

Nullriver is not the only option though, iPhone 3G Blog has a step by step guide that involves you first needing to jailbreak your iPhone and then installing a couple of pieces of software on your iPhone. It seems quite straight forward to do and the author of the post claims it only took about 3 minutes to set up.

Kyle over at Dragon Forged has yet another option for you to try; he has even put together a nice 11-step guide to help you along the way.

Using any of these methods it would seem you need to Jailbreak your iPhone and so you do run a risk of bricking your lovely shiny Apple iPhone but there are always risks in life so you may believe the benefits are worth it. These methods get the job done but don’t expect them to be blazingly quick.

Not all the versions of iPod/iPhone come with their own stand as standard so the industrious users at instructables have come up with several homemade solutions. You could go out and buy a stand from the shops relatively cheaply, but you could make your own for less money and have more fun doing it. There are several options for making your own stand; you could make one that fits in your wallet or you could make a car stand for your iPhone or iPod Touch. Read on to find out more.

iPhone/iPod stand from a business card

This is a very neat idea, all you need is a business card (or simply some card), scissors and a ruler. Cut the two lines marked, and then fold the card where the other lines are and you have a stand for your iPod of iPhone. This little stand will fit back in your wallet when you are done so it is very portable. It may be slightly gimmicky but you could use it as your business card and pass out iPhone stand cards to all the people you meet so they will always have your number to hand.

iPhone/iPod stand from document clips

This one doesn’t come with any instructions except the image above. It is quite straight forward, you will need 2 large bulldog clips, 2 small bulldog clips and 3 thingies to clip the two small bulldog clips together.

Not quite small enough to fit in a wallet but will easily fit in a pocket, you could even dismantle it to make it easier.

iPhone/ iPod Touch car stand doc

This stand for an iPhone or iPod Touch is made from items you can find in your home, except for maybe Velcro which you might have to buy. The person on instructables cleverly uses the plastic base which came in the box with your iPhone/iPod, as the main stand.

Your HDTV is meant to have an amazing image quality but the chances are it is not as good as it could be. Unless you have calibrated your HDTV it will not be performing to the best of its potential. You could shell out a few hundred to get a professional to do it for you, but why do that when it is quite easy to do it yourself…

You will still need to shell out a few bucks but that is nothing compared to the joy of watching films and television programs the way they were meant to be. An article from PC World has the low down on what you will need and how to use it. If done right the configuration of your HDTV will take you some time and if you use a wizard to help you it will cost you about $30.

As you know HDTV have lots of settings, some are quite straight forward but to do a good job of calibrating, it is important you have a good grasp of these settings and how they will affect the HDTV’s image. Again PC World comes to the rescue and explains all you need to know, with some useful tips.

The article from PC World takes you through all the steps, includes some reviews of supporting software and links to more detailed information. They even have a video of so if you are in a lazy mood you don’t need to build up the energy to read, although when going through the process of configuring your HDTV I would recommend using the written article rather than the video.

Manually configuring you HDTV is quite straight forward and you should get good results but it can be time consuming and if you have already paid a whole lot of money for a TV with the best picture quality because you really want, the best picture you can possibly get. You should consider paying a professional to do the configuration, they know a lot more about all the settings and technology, and they also have better software to aid them.

The Nintendo Wii is very nice to look at and its unique controller system makes it extremely cool to play, but it does lack some features which other consoles have. One of these being an ability to connect directly with other devices on your network and stream photos, videos or music from them. Here is the situation: you have a device which is network enabled and can interact with a TV (your Wii) and you have a device that is also network enabled and has a movie you want to watch, however you have a slight problem, they can’t communicate, so never no chance of watching your movie. Well, that is not entirely true, there are a few things you can do
