A little while ago we wrote about the SpeakerBuddy which reminded us of a cowering child with a hoodie (not sure what that says about our state of mind) but kitting out your Hi-Fi with little people shaped speakers can be a bit on the pricy side. With the recession looming we all need to save the change where we can, so how about creating your own “SpeakerBuddy”?

To make your very own person shaped speaker you simply have to butcher a little toy called “Munny” which can be purchased at Kidrobot. There are a selection of colours and styles. If you find having little people with music blearing out of their faces is not creepy enough for you, you could have one of these speaker people hold an axe as pictured.

The general process for creating these speakers is extreamly easy and logical and involves cutting the face off the Munny and replacing it with a speaker. For the full step by step instructions with useful pictures check out Munny Speakers at Instructables.

If you liked the crazy dancing Sony Rolly mp3 player you are going to love this new addition to the world of mad speaker design. The Freewheeler speakers created in collaboration with designers Ron Arad and Frances Pellisari certainly make you raise one eyebrow and mouth, “what” when you first see it.

The 23″ tall by 10″ wide speakers would not look out of place rolling along attached to a pimped out car but I don’t think that is its original purpose. Freewheeler is designed to be used indoors or out and even offers stereo sound. The marvel of stereo sound is not achieved by the Freewheeler rolling backwards and forwards like a crazed puppy but by the cleverly designed components that can split the signal.

Are you ready for the price…?

Griffin have released the Griffin Evolve Wireless Sound System, which sounds like it’s a nice piece of high-tech equipment designed to take on other wireless sound systems such as the Philips Streamium range or the Sony Giga Juke.

Sadly, its nothing of the sort. What you get instead is a set of speakers and an iPod dock. So where’s the wireless part come from, you may ask. Simple: the whole thing runs on batteries, meaning there are, quite literally, no wires!

Sometimes it’s the simple ideas that are winners!

Here are a pair of speakers from Genius that love to be touched; the SP-T1200 touch speakers, which come in a stylish black-onyx finish, have a touch panel that lights up in excitement when you use it.

The touch screen enables you to control the volume, bass and treble with a slide of the finger. In addition to the touch screen features you will also get a jack for headphones, audio cable and a mute button. These speakers are aimed at the potable market so are small and only use 30 watt, therefore don’t be surprised if the sound quality is not as meaty as you would like.

Not sure how the shiny black will cope with all the grubby fingers touching it, but a quick wipe should get it pristine again. The Genius SP-T1200 retails at USD$99, you can find all the resellers here: http://www.geniusnetusa.com/buy.php

Nextar’s Bluetooth floating speakers will play continuously for 4 hours and are ideal for using in your pool, but I am sure there are many more people without pools than there are with (me included), so what use is this gadget to us, we may as well just buy the sentry water proof speakers? Well the Nextar’s speakers aren’t limited to just pools, for example you could stick them in the pond with your gold fish, or (and this is what I want to try) have the speaker floating around in the bubbles in your bath.

The dock is equipped with Bluetooth so you can connect most modern MP3 players, you could even hook up your mobile phone to it.

Floating, waterproof speakers are a good idea but I don’t like the design of these speakers (they remind me of a floating robot head) and at $119 they are not cheap, so I agree with Slash Gear and would go with this cheaper alternative instead.

[Source: Tech Digest, Slash Gear]
